Picture this: You step into a virtual world where you can face off against a worthy opponent or take on the ultimate challenge of the virtual wall. With VR technology, you’ll be right there on the table, feeling every exhilarating serve, smash, and spin. Get your game face on and prepare to dominate the ping-pong arena.

GOOGLE EXPERIMENT: KONTERBALL

Lantern

Lantern explores real-world projections and their use in the Internet of Things (IoT). It envisions a future where projections display ambient information and relevant user interface (UI) on everyday objects. With Lantern, you can point it at a clock to see your appointments or point it at a speaker to view the currently playing song. The projections fade away when no longer needed, unlike a screen. Lantern is created using a standard lamp, Raspberry Pi 3, a laser projector, and Android Things. It is open and customizable, allowing you to build your own using their provided kit list and instructions.

Have You Been Involved in a Data Breach?

Curious to discover the extent of your personal information that’s accessible online? Now’s the perfect opportunity to explore and find out. According to the Identity Theft Resource Center’s 2022 Annual Data Breach Report, the number of data compromises was the second highest number ever seen in a single year, second only to 2021. 2022 missed the highest record set in 2021 by just 60 events with 1,802 compromises. There were 422.1 million individuals impacted in 2022, which was an increase of over 40% from 2021.

Why You Should Pay Attention to Data Breaches

The types of information released most often in data breaches are email addresses, passwords, names, usernames, and phone numbers. Now pause for a moment and think about where those bits and pieces of information could lead to in your life.

When your personal information is compromised in a data breach, it puts your personal security at risk. Cybercriminals can use this information for identity theft, fraud, or other malicious activities. By checking to see if you have been involved in a data breach, you can take immediate action to protect your accounts and personal information.

How to See if You’ve Been Compromised

While many are familiar with notable data breaches at companies like Optus and Medibank, numerous incidents go unreported. That’s where Australian online security specialist Troy Hunt’s creation, Have I Been Pwned?, comes into play. The primary purpose of this free service is for individuals to be able to easily evaluate the risk of whether their accounts were involved in a data breach. It is used by many national governments, security services, and law enforcement.

A Shocking Visual

Story Lab and ABC Australia have created a visual tool with the help of Have I Been Pwned? for us to understand what industry experts call the “mosaic effect.” According to Centre for Humdata, the mosaic effect is when disparate pieces of data or information—although individually of limited utility—become significant when combined with other types of information. Basically, it just means that a stand alone breach may seem harmless, but when multiple breaches occur, you can piece all your vital information together.

When I tested the interactive tool with an old email address created in my twenties, it pieced together a mosaic puzzle sharing the year and place I was compromised. It found that I had been compromised 23 times. Ouch!

Overall, checking if you have been involved in a data breach is essential for protecting your personal security, preventing identity theft, safeguarding your accounts, maintaining privacy, and complying with relevant regulations. It enables you to stay proactive and take necessary steps to minimize the impact of a data breach on your personal information.

Get ready to be blown away!

3. Puzzle Party

Puzzles are one of my favorite activities. I always have a puzzle out on my table and at TCEA headquarters. I use it for a brain break at home and in the office. Puzzle Party allows you to choose from three difficulty levels and has an impressive selection of over 500 artworks, including iconic pieces like Andy Warhol’s Flowers and Amy Sherald’s portrait of Michelle Obama. There’s something for everyone! And guess what? It allows you to work on the puzzle solo or with family and friends no matter where they are.

4. FreddieMeter

Know how people absolutely love singing along with Freddie Mercury? If you’re one of those people, here’s an awesome AI-powered experiment that is a singing challenge that analyzes your timbre, pitch, and melody to see just how closely you match Freddie’s incredible vocals. The best part? Your audio stays private because there’s no need to upload it to any servers for analysis. So go ahead and belt it out and let’s see if you’ve got that Freddie magic in your voice!

Inspired by the trend of people purchasing a second simpler phone to use over holidays and weekends to limit technology use, the goal was to give people an opportunity to try a day without a phone without having to buy a second phone. Stay connected while traveling with Wi-Fi Map. Discover free WiFi hotspots with an interactive map and offline mode. When using the offline mode, you’ll see a list of all the hotspots with passwords in your chosen area. You can also contribute to the app by sharing new hotspots in the places you visit. Only available for iOS.

iPhone Tips and Tricks You May Not Know

If you’ve got an iPhone, chances are you’re not using it to the fullest! There are tons of features and shortcuts that you just might now know about. These little tricks can be time-savers, game-changers, or just plain fun. Let’s take a look at nine tips for iPhone users to explore and enjoy.

1. Swipe to type.

Did you know that you can just swipe to type your messages on an iPhone? Say goodbye to the hunt-and-peck method. Once you get the hang of it, it’s faster than typing one character at a time.

2. Quickly delete in the calculator app.

Did you know with just a swipe, you can delete a number instead of starting over? Left swipe over the numbers you input at the top of the calculator screen and watch them disappear one at a time. You can also tap and hold the number to copy it.

3. Lock down your app to one for someone else.

With iPhone’s Guided Access, you can let your child play on an app or someone view your photos and make it impossible for them to access other apps or information on your phone. Once you’ve got it all set up, you can open up an app and then lock it down to just that one app. So if you want to show a slideshow to Aunt Jackie of your latest cruise to the Bahamas, you’ll push the power button three times to activate guided access. Press it three times again to exit guided access and enter your passcode. Here’s how to set it up:

Open Settings.
Go to Accessibility.
Scroll down and select Guided Access and toggle it on.
Tap Passcode Settings.
Tap Guided Access Passcode.
Set up your passcode for guided access. You also have the option to toggle on Face ID as well.

4. Set a timer for your music.

If you’re like me, someone who likes to listen to music to fall asleep but wants to give your ears a rest at some point, you can set a timer to turn off your music.

Open your Clock app.
Tap Timer at the bottom right.
Decide how long you want to play your music. Then, scroll to the bottom and select Stop Playing.
Set it and forget it. The music will turn off based on the allotted time you chose.

5. Measure all the things.

Yes, you read that right. Do you have an iPhone 12 Pro or newer? You can measure the height of any object or person. Just make sure they are in good lighting. It can all be done with the Measure app.

6. Create a notification summary.

Tired of those constant notification dings throughout your day? With iOS 15, and the movement for us not to be disturbed by our phones, they have made it so you can get all of your notifications at once.

Go to Settings.
Tap Notifications.
Tap Scheduled Summary and toggle it on.
Tap Continue and customize exactly what you want to add to your summary of notifications, along with the time you want them to be delivered.

7. Live Text for the win!

Do you need to copy text from an image or document? Live text can do the work. Just open up your camera app and give it a try. An icon in the right corner will illuminate to yellow and it’s ready to copy the text. It also does this for phone numbers and will give you the option to call if it recognizes a number.

8. Edit your text messages AND unsend them.

It’s true! This is now possible with iOS 16. However, all users must have an iPhone in order to take advantage. If you are texting someone with an older iOS version, it will send the new message but it will tell them you edited with a more prominent edited alert. To edit or unsend a message, just hold down the text and options will appear. Warning: You can only edit messages 15 minutes after sending.

9. Customize your lock screen.

First off, did you know you can change your lock screen (wallpaper) when it’s locked? Just unlock your iPhone with your face and hold down the screen until it shrinks. You’ll see the option to customize your screen. (You’re welcome for that tip within a tip!) Okay, so now for the customization options. They have everything from choosing a color, adding the weather and various widgets, putting your favorite emojis front and center, shuffling photos, and more!

Eight Things Educators Should Do On Spring Break

It’s that time of the year again– spring break! Woo hoo! This is the perfect opportunity for you to recharge and have some fun, so let’s make the most of it, shall we? Avoid these common pitfalls that educators make when they have time off.

1. Don’t Work.

First things first, put away those lesson plans, grading sheets, and school emails. You’re on break now, baby! Time to kick up your feet and relax. It’s important to take a step back from work and focus on yourself for a bit. While it may be tempting to use the break to catch up on grading or lesson planning, doing so can lead to burnout and prevent you from fully enjoying your time off.

2. Get Outside.

Now don’t be a hermit and stay cooped up inside all day. Get outside and soak up some Vitamin D! Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on all the health benefits that come with fresh air and sunlight. Did you know exposure to natural light also helps regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycle, which in turn improves sleep quality and quantity? Get out there, connect with nature, and have an adventure!

3. Try New Things.

Speaking of adventures, why not try something new this spring break? Who says you can’t learn new things outside of the classroom! Here are some ideas, but the possibilities are endless!

Pick up a hobby
Try a new sport
Take a spontaneous road trip
Visit a local attraction you’ve not seen yet
Discover a new park or trail
Eat at a restaurant you’ve not tried

4. Get Some Sleep.

But wait, let’s not forget about sleep! We’re all guilty of burning the midnight oil during the school year, so now is the perfect time to catch up on some ZZZs. Get comfy, cozy, and snuggle up for a good night’s rest. Your body (and your students) will thank you for it.

5. Don’t Neglect Your Personal Life.

It’s time to ditch the work mindset and focus on the good stuff: your personal life! It’s the perfect opportunity to spend time with loved ones or simply indulge in some “me time.” Connecting with family and friends can do wonders and provide a fresh perspective on life beyond the classroom. So get out there and make some memories!

6. Don’t Ignore Your Health.

We all know you lead crazy busy lives, but let’s not forget about the most important thing: your health! Take this time to prioritize physical well-being and get those endorphins pumping. Kick those stressors to the curb and show your body some serious love and attention! You deserve it.

7. Don’t Overschedule Yourself.

While it may be tempting to fill up every single second of your time, let’s not forget the importance of old-fashioned R&R. It’s 100% okay to take a chill pill and prioritize quality time with yourself. Rest up, reflect on all the awesome things you’ve accomplished this year, and get ready to slay the rest of the academic year like a boss.

8. Don’t Neglect Your Mental Health.

Last but not least, don’t neglect your mental health. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of teaching, but taking care of yourself is just as important. Take some time to do things that make you happy, whether it’s binge-watching your favorite show or reading a good book. Whatever it is, just make sure it brings a smile to your face.
