Three Activities for the Chinese New Year

It’s time to welcome the Chinese New Year! The Year of the Snake is set to begin on Wednesday, January 29th, 2025, marking the start of the most important traditional holiday in China. Also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, this celebration is a time for honoring deities and ancestors, family reunions, feasts, and various customs meant to bring good luck for the coming year. To help your students learn about the rich traditions and symbolism of this ancient festival, I’ve prepared a trio of activities for the Chinese New Year:

Happy Chinese New Year Digital Breakout

Are you ready to embark on a cultural journey and unlock the mysteries of the Chinese New Year? The Year of the Snake digital breakout awaits your puzzle-solving skills! This breakout adventure will test your problem-solving skills, teamwork, and knowledge about Chinese traditions.

Important Information

  • Unravel clues and hidden messages carefully concealed within the site’s content about Chinese New Year customs and symbolism to solve the breakout.
  • Put your critical thinking and collaboration skills to work as you unlock five digital puzzles: 4 Word Lock, 6 Number Lock, 4 Direction Lock, 6 Direction Lock, and a Number Symbol Lock. 
  • Special Note on the Number Symbol Lock. This is my own creation of a lock! Look for an object you see a whole bunch of on the page. Symbols could be like a star, a cloud, or perhaps a shape. Keep count of how many symbols you spot, and this is the number you will use in the lock answer (e.g., 23STAR or 18CIRCLE.

How to Choose Your 2024 Word of the Year

In the new year, it’s always interesting to look back to see what was popular and new in the previous year. Critics share their top movies and TV shows. Search engines list the top searches. There are top hits for music, bestseller lists for books, and so on. But did you realize that dictionaries choose a “word of the year?” Sometimes, the various dictionaries agree on this word, but not always. Words chosen may be newly added to their dictionary, or they may be an expansion of a definition to include a new way a word has been used.

Word of the Year for 2023

Each year, there are discussions, debates, and votes to select a word of the year. They seek to choose a word that best captures the spirit, concerns, and significant trends of the time — a word that shows promise of becoming an important cultural term.

This year, Oxford Dictionary has chosen “rizz“ as the word of the year. Short for charisma, rizz means style, charm, or attractiveness. There was a significant increase in usage of a 2023 interview with Tom Holland during which he used the word.

Dicitionary.com identified their word for the year: “hallucinate.” When referring to artificial intelligence, this word means to produce false information contrary to the user’s intent and present it as true and factual. The definition of hallucinate has been updated to include this meaning.

Merriam-Webster has decided that the word of the year is “authentic.” Authentic refers to something genuine, real, or true, rather than being a copy or imitation. This word saw a significant boost in lookups in 2023 “driven by stories and conversations about AI, celebrity culture, identity, and social media.”

My Word of the Year for 2024

Seeing the various words chosen for 2023 as “Word of the Year” got me thinking about my word for this upcoming year. Sure, these words represent the previous year, but what about choosing a word to set intentions moving forward? Do I want it to highlight relationships I want to build and go deeper with this year? Maybe an adjective to describe growth in areas I’ve wanted to work on but have been too busy for? Possibly an adverb that adds more intentionality to actions I’ll be taking this year? The possibilities are endless. For me, choosing this word is akin to deciding what I want to order when I go to The Cheesecake Factory. There are way too many options to choose from.

My word for the new year is “initiative.” Yes, I know it isn’t a new word, but it’s the one I’ve chosen as my guiding force for 2024.

Initiative refers to the ability and willingness to take independent and proactive actions to achieve a particular goal or bring about a desired outcome.

I have a list of goals I’ve made— some immediate, some short-term, and some long-term. In the process of making my list, I realized I wanted to make progress in many areas this year. The word “initiative” encapsulates the essence of being proactive, taking charge, and making things happen. This word aligns with my desire to move forward intentionally. It also serves as a personal reminder to overcome motivation challenges and act as my accountability partner.

Self-Improvement Apps and Sites to Fuel Your 2024 Journey

Mel Robbins has a lot to say when it comes to making self-improvements. One of her videos made the biggest impact on me this year. In it, she said that no one is coming to change your life. You have to parent yourself. As the new year gets closer, you may find yourself wanting to make changes or knowing that you need to make changes, even if you aren’t excited about it. If you’re trying to start a new habit in 2024, consider using websites or apps for self-improvement to help in the process. Though a close friend is beneficial for accountability, having the data and reports that a techie tool can provide is sometimes great. So, along with listening to Mel Robbins, here are a few websites and apps for self-improvement as you make your journey in 2024.

Apps for Habit Tracking

Many believe that it takes 21 days to establish a habit, which seems to be a misinterpretation of Maxwell Maltz’s work on self-image. A European Journal of Social Psychology research study shows that it might be as few as 18 days or as many as 254 days. The key to establishing a new habit is to be consistent and not rush it. Don’t feel you must establish a new habit in “x” number of days because of peer or societal pressure. Here are a few apps to boost self-improvement practices and habits. Check them out to see if one is a good fit for you.

This app for self-improvement is for iOS and Android and can be customized in many ways to make it feel like it is your app. HabitBull helps keep track of all your habits, routines, and repeated to-dos. If you enjoy stats, graphs, and charts to see your progress, then you’ll like the many reporting features within this app. Take advantage of the free week trial period to see if HabitBull can help you establish new habits!

Google Sheets

If you enjoy spreadsheets, check out Molly McHugh-Johnson’s post on how to use Google Sheets. You may not have considered using Google Sheets for self-improvement or habit-tracking, but it could be your new best friend. You’ll find her article a nice mix of techie and doable! She walks you through adding dates, events, files, emojis, and more.

You may be familiar with Todoist as a tracking app for your to-do list, but they also have templates to help you with various self-improvement and habit-tracking efforts. You will need to subscribe to the Pro account, which is currently $4 per month, to get the activity history, reminders, and durations you want. Plus, it includes a built-in AI assistant!

Apps and Sites for Meditation

Healthy Minds Program

If you want to meditate to improve your mental health or focus, you might find that many popular ones like Calm or Headspace come with a price tag that might be above your budget. If that is the case, consider checking out the Healthy Minds Program app, made free from donations. This app for self-improvement and well-being combines cutting-edge neuroscience, ancient wisdom, and practical skills to help you flourish.

Smiling Mind

You might also consider downloading and trying out Smiling Mind, another free app for self-improvement and mindfulness that lets you practice daily meditation and mindfulness exercises from any device. Here, you will find free programs for both children and adults. If you have a Google smart device, try saying something like “Hey Google, do a sleep meditation with Smiling Mind,” or “Hey Google, help me focus with Smiling Mind.”

Noisli

If you prefer background noise to help you meditate and focus but aren’t looking for an app to download, go to Noisli. Sign up for a free account and create your custom playlist with over 15 sounds, such as thunderstorms, wind, oceans, rain, fire, and more. You can adjust the volume of each to create the right mix for you.

Workout and Fitness Tools

This nonprofit and ad-free site will get you up and running in no time. While it’s not an app for self-improvement per se, you’ll find plenty of information, including helpful videos for your journey. It will certainly help you identify the best routine to accomplish the goals you’ve set. Also, it shows how to have the correct form for each exercise that interests you.

Fitness Blender

This tiered website offers a ton of free resources so everyone everywhere has access to get healthy, even if you can’t afford a gym. It’s an excellent resource for self-improvement and habit-building. You’ll find free full-length workout videos, meal plans, and workout programs. Use their filter to locate free workout routines. 

Muscle Wiki

Check out Muscle Wiki if you aren’t familiar with all the workout names but know which muscles you want to address. Click on the muscle in the diagram, and Muscle Wiki will serve up videos to address that muscle. If you know the name of the muscle or want to identify exercises you can do with specific equipment, then jump to their directory for an easy way to filter and find what will help you with your 2024 makeover.

Two Bonus Tools

Here are a couple of additional resources for self-improvement that don’t necessarily fit neatly into a single category. But these are worth considering as you look to make improvements for 2024. 

TED is a rich resource of TED talks from experts in a wide range of areas. So, whatever interests you, there will surely be a TED talk to interest and motivate you. Browse their library and find many videos that you’ll need to create a bucket list for those you want to view.

Coursera is great if you want to learn new skills; whether you are looking for something as short as a two-hour learning experience or one that is much more in-depth, Coursera is sure to have it covered. Besides free courses, you can also find courses that let you earn a certificate or a degree!

Forget Resolutions; Choose One Word

During my many years, I have made more than my fair share of New Year’s resolutions, most of them involving major changes that I wanted to make in my life. And, like most of the world, not long afterwards, my good intentions fell by the wayside. “According to U.S. News & World Report, the failure rate for New Year’s resolutions is said to be about 80 percent, and most lose their resolve by mid-February.” (Source)

Psychologists don’t agree on why our resolutions tend to fail. It could be that we have unrealistic expectations or that our goals are unclear or that we word them negatively instead of in a positive light. Regardless of the reason, most of our very good intentions will end in wasted efforts and a big dose of guilt on our part for having failed again.

How to Really Encourage Change

If making resolutions don’t work, then what can we do to become better people? Melinda Gates recommends choosing a word of the year to fully embrace instead of making a resolution. This process provides clarity by taking all your big plans for life change and narrowing them down into a single focus, just one word that centers on your character and creates a vision for your future.

For example, instead of making a resolution to lose weight or to quit smoking or to exercise more (some of the most common resolutions made each year), instead embrace one word that helps you focus on the next steps in your growth. You might select “consistent” to help you focus on eating well on a regular basis or “enough” to remind you that you don’t need too much. Some people who have tried this approach have selected the word “fearless” or “centered” or “peace” or “present.” There is no right or wrong word, only the word that will help you become a better you.

How to Select Your One Word

Step 1: Think about the kind of person you want to be one year from now. Be realistic and be kind to yourself.

Step 2: Identify the characteristics that the person you want to become would have. Is that person generous? Confident? Healthy? Unafraid? Happy? Write them all down.

Step 3: Once you have a list of words that describe the potential you, simply pick one of them to focus on this year. Don’t let yourself pick more than one; you need to commit to just one word.

Step 4: Embrace your word. Create reminders to yourself about it, perhaps by making a piece of art that will remind you of its meaning or by putting up sticky notes with the word on it around your work and home. Remind yourself positively about your one word on a regular basis, either as a mantra or a prayer or a statement or a song, whatever works for you.

Step 5: Share your word if you are comfortable doing so. A partner or friend can help support in your journey. Or, if you want a bigger support group, Tweet your word to #oneword.

My Word

After going through all of these steps and spending some time thinking about my goals, I have chosen “balance” as my word. I struggle with having a very strong Type A personality, which means I tend to go overboard in lots of different areas in my life, from eating to working to feeling. This year, I will embrace the concept of balance to help me remember to keep the parts of my life in equal proportions to each other and to what I need. I believe that if I can remain focused on being balanced, I will be a healthier, happier, and gentler person by this time next December.

Final Advice

Let go of the resolution, must-do, don’t fail mentality. “It’s far more effective to gently focus on a word like ‘health’ than to command yourself to get to the gym. As you inspire yourself toward good health, it’s likely that you will find a way to achieve it. Make sure that your word feels good to you, not pushy and demanding.” (Source)

Three Tips to Make Your Ed Tech Integration Resolutions Stick in 2019

Every year, without fail, the new year brings with it an air of melancholy for me. Often, as I look back on the past year, I wonder why I, like so many others, wasn’t able to keep my New Year’s resolutions. As a type-A person, that sentence hurts to even write! But perhaps you have felt the same?

One Step at a Time

Research shows that between 90 and 92 percent of people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions. Many of these are due to a lack of setting specific goals that will still challenge you along the way. Some are also the result of a lack of persistence to keep your initiative moving.

For example, let’s say your goal is to learn Spanish between now and the end of the year. That’s great, but it’s not exactly specific. To make it specific and challenging, you should break your goal down into measurable chunks. For example: “In February, I will learn 30 words in Spanish.” This makes it a targeted goal that you can then break down even further. You can then take steps toward achieving something that is getting you closer to your goal every day. This keeps you motivated and more likely to follow through on a day-by-day basis.

Tackling Ed Tech Integration

The same principle of tackling a big project with slow, steady, measurable steps applies to integrating ed tech in a classroom. There are even more barriers to ed tech integration as a broader initiative that is campus- or district-wide. We all know what the research says, so why is there a lag when it comes to implementation?

Educators and administrators face many barriers to implementing instructional technology. These barriers include a lack of resources and training, inadequate knowledge and skills, and institutional barriers.

TCEA understands that although most educators and administrators believe in the benefits of ed tech, they may not be set up for success. That’s why we at TCEA have set an organizational resolution in 2019. Our goal is to educate even more campuses and districts on proven, research-based strategies for successful implementation.

As we work to bring these new research-based strategies to you in a broader, more impactful way, I will leave you with three tips for overcoming your problems with ed tech implementation.

1. Create a Shared Vision

Get your colleagues involved with ed tech. Help one person find one way of restructuring one aspect of their instruction to include technology. Work with your campus or district administrators. Help them understand the relationship between ed tech and student achievement. Involve others in creating an organizational resolution that focuses on ed tech implementation. After all, we are stronger together.

2. Overcome Limited Resources

Lack of resources or access to technology is the greatest barrier many in education face when it comes to implementation. Work to find creative ways of accessing technology (repurposing old technologies, for example) or utilize your students to help you learn a new technology. Provide them with an incentive for being involved and engaged in this way. Although the initial step of finding creative ways of implementing technology may take more time than desired, the benefits of setting the time aside now will be worth it for you and your students long term.

3. Meld Technology into the Curriculum

Implementing ed tech shouldn’t just be about cramming technology into the curriculum you’re already tasked with teaching. The use of technology should be to enhance instruction. As I begin my personal journey to better myself and the world around me in 2019, I hope these tips will help you do the same. Let’s keep our resolutions this year! Revisit your ed tech implementation plan to find something that works for you. More importantly, begin to work with those who surround you on a daily basis to help them realize that ed tech implementation can no longer be a lone-wolf effort. To truly implement something that will enhance instruction and provide for deeper learning, full campus or district involvement is key to success. I have full faith that 2019 can be the year you and I succeed at our resolutions and truly expand the use of educational technology, because with TCEA, we’ve got this!
