The Digital Citizenship Breakout
Teaching digital citizenship doesn’t have to feel like a lecture—it can be an adventure! Imagine your students diving into a fun, interactive challenge where they unlock clues, solve puzzles, and gain valuable skills to navigate the digital world responsibly.
What Is Digital Citizenship?
Digital citizenship refers to the responsible and ethical use of technology and the internet. It involves understanding how to engage safely, respectfully, and thoughtfully in digital spaces. This includes practicing online safety, protecting personal information, recognizing credible sources, and communicating respectfully on social media and other platforms.
Why Is Digital Citizenship Important to Teach?
In today’s technology-driven world, teaching digital citizenship is more important than ever. Students are constantly connected through social media, online learning, and digital communication, making it essential for them to understand how to navigate these spaces responsibly. Educating students about digital citizenship helps prevent cyberbullying, protects their privacy, and promotes critical thinking about online content. It also encourages positive online behavior and prepares them to be responsible digital leaders. By teaching these skills, educators equip students to make safe, ethical, and informed decisions in the digital world.
The Digital Citizenship Breakout
In honor of Digital Citizenship Week, here is my newest breakout. The Digital Citizenship Breakout has four digital locks, and I think it is geared for fifth grade and above. Unlike my previous breakouts, there is more text than images. AND just like all my breakouts, I can provide the four lock answers if you email me at preimers@tcea.org. If you need more information on digital breakouts, please check out my Digital Breakouts 101 blog.
