Eight Chrome Extensions and Sites You May Not Know (November 2021)

It’s hard for me to believe that 2021 is nearly over. This year will be behind us before we know it! Whether you are saying “good riddance” or enjoyed slowly stepping out into a “new normal,” my hope for you is that you intentionally create little moments of appreciation in your life. In the words of Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” With that being said, let’s jump right into some extensions and sites that might help you get more out of life.

Chrome Extensions to Try

Custom Cursor for Chrome. This one isn’t new, and there are plenty of extensions just like it. I like to switch up my cursor each month. For November, I chose a slice of pumpkin pie to act as my cursor. You can also upload images to create your own cursor. If you really want your students to pay attention to the content you’re displaying, you could make your cursor your own face, for example.

Gratitude. If you like to journal or just want to create a little more gratitude in your life, this is a quick and easy way to accomplish that. Just add to a list of things you are thankful for each time you open a new tab. With every tab you open, you type in something you are thankful for. Gratitude remembers it, and it’s there the next time you open a new tab. Pretty soon, you’ll have a huge list of all the little things you are grateful for in your life.

Chrome Piano. What better time than the holidays to show off your musical skills? Don’t worry, though. With this extension, no musical talent is needed. This handy extension turns your browser into a piano. In no time, you’ll be creating music with your keyboard and mouse.

My Quotes New Tab. I’m a big fan of quotes because every single person has a different walk in life. I love to laugh, be inspired, and think deeper about another’s interpretation of life. My Quotes New Tab will drop pearls of wisdom into every new tab opened. Plus, it will let you customize each tab into a dashboard of sorts where you can create to-do lists, see the weather forecast, and more.

Teleparty. Formally known as Netflix Party, this extension is a great way to stay connected to friends and family without leaving your home. It allows you to watch Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, and HBO in sync with other viewers. Now you can recite every word of your favorite movie whether your bestie is near or far. With my son off at college, this is our solution to keeping our tradition of watching The Elf as we (..ahem…I) decorate the tree.

Must-Visit Websites

Find the Invisible Cow. Make sure you have your audio on for this one. Think of it as Where’s Waldo, but in audio style. The voice will get louder and faster the closer you move your cursor to the invisible cow. You’ll either love me or hate me for this one!

Do Nothing for 2 Minutes. You might be thinking, easy as pecan pie! But this is a tougher challenge than most realize. The website will put a timer on the screen where you have to do nothing for that entire duration. Take two minutes out of your day to breathe and relax.

The Useless Web. If you find yourself wanting to do anything else but grade papers over the Thanksgiving break, head over to The Useless Web. It will take you to random websites designed to help you procrastinate. On my first attempt, it took me to Always Judge a Book by its Cover.

Happy fall, y’all! I’m glad to be back again with more finds for you this month, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Let’s jump right in!

Chrome Extensions to Try

Weave Highlighter. When reading a book or even a PDF, it’s easy to highlight, but what about things you find on the web? Now you can highlight whatever you’re reading online with Weave Highlighter. Highlight and annotate with multiple colors and revisit them later with just a single click.

Magic Actions for YouTube. Take your YouTube experience to the next level with this extension. My favorite features of this extension are the ability to hide comments and the ability to increase or decrease the volume by hovering your mouse over the video.

Google Arts & Culture. Add a little culture to your day by discovering beautiful artwork each time you open a tab in Chrome. You can customize your settings to see the same masterpiece each day or roll the dice and get a new piece of art with each new tab.

OpenDyslexic. Do you or one of your students have dyslexia? OpenDyslexic, an open-sourced font, was created specifically for those that struggle with dyslexia by using heavy-weighted bottoms in certain letters. Try this Chrome extension to increase readability.

TinEye. You stumble upon a great image you want to use, but have no idea who created it or where it came from. TinEye to the rescue! This extension helps you find out where an image came from, how it’s used, and can even find a version that is higher resolution.

Must-Visit Websites

I’m Remembering. Some might say that the 1980s-90s were the best period of time to live in. Whether you lived through it or just want to know what all the hype is about, this website will instantly bring you back to that era. Go ahead and take a break as you hit up this blast from the past!

The Awkward Yeti. It’s time to celebrate those awkward moments in life. This comic strip website will have you smiling as you relate to some of the best and worst struggles in life.

Freckle. Here is a website that younger students might just be begging to hop on and learn. You’ll find games and activities for math, English/Language Arts, social studies, and science.

It’s been a busy month around here, with all of the staff in full swing planning for the 2022 TCEA Convention & Exposition. Consequently, we’re just going to jump right into all of the good website and Chrome extension finds for September.

Chrome Extensions to Try

QR Code Generator and Beautification Studio. With this extension, you can design, color, and decorate QR codes, including framing them by shape. I imagine some great possibilities and organization happening with this tool. Perhaps you’ll be color-coding by subject or lesson plan? Time for those with a Type A personality to go nuts!

Sortd for Gmail. Are you a list lover like me? Do you use Gmail as your primary email client? Say “hello” to Sortd for Gmail. This is a pretty simple add-on, but I love its visual for seeing what needs to be addressed next inside of Gmail. For example, I receive a lot of notifications for comments from Google Docs. I can’t get to these right away, but mentally I need to set them to the side to address later. This gives me a visual to let me know what I’ve put to the side so that I can focus on my current task. There are many more ways to use this tool that I haven’t even tapped into, so be sure to let me know how you end up using it by commenting on this post.

Boxel Rebound. Need a brain break? Try this box-jumping game that is surprisingly addictive. You’ve been warned!

React: Emoji, GIFs & Filters for Google Meet. Not only does this extension give you those video filters for mornings where you just didn’t have it in you to do your full-on routine, but it also allows you to react with emojis or GIFs without interrupting the speaker. This extension adds a toolbar to your screen that is only visible during video calls.

Wordtune – AI-Powered Writing Companion. Sometimes the struggle is real when it comes to finding another way to say whatever you are thinking. That’s where Wordtune comes to the rescue. It understands what you’re trying to say and suggests ways that can help make your writing clear and a bit more authentic. Give it a try!

Must-Visit Websites

Taco Spin. Yes, that’s right, tacos. Sure, it’s pretty mindless, but it’s a taco, and who doesn’t love tacos? It even counts the number of times you watched it spin, so if you need to feel like you’ve accomplished something, there is that.

All That’s Interesting. This website offers you something interesting to read every day. From history to news to science, there is something for everyone. However, this site is not appropriate for student use as sometimes the news stories may be too serious.

Fun Trivia. If you are a fan of all things trivia, then check out the site. It is the world’s largest trivia website with over 150,000 quizzes, including K-12 educational quizzes. Plus, it also houses thousands of crossword puzzles, challenges, and other games.

In the great state of Texas, we have entered into full back-to-school mode. August signals the use of alarm clocks and having to get back into our “school clothes.” Have we all survived our first week or two back with students in the classroom? Yes? No? Hopefully, everyone is nodding “yes” right about now. Okay, let’s jump right in with this month’s Chrome extensions and site finds.

Chrome Extensions to Try

Sir Links-a-lot This extension isn’t new to the scene, but many are still surprised to learn its benefits. It allows you four options for creating custom-share links to your files with just a few clicks, including Force a Copy links.

Turn Off the Lights Playing a video on a website and don’t want your students to get distracted by the other content around it? Use Turn Off the Lights. Just click on the lamp, and the page will fade to dark, focusing on the video. Hit the lamp button again for the page to return to normal.

Random Student Generator for Google Classroom There are several great random generator tools out there, and here is another one to add to your repertoire. Using the classes already set up in your Google Classroom, this extension allows you to quickly select a random student.

Coffeelings Are you working on self-care this year? Journaling is a great way to do that. If you are anything like me, though, it can be hard to pull out a notebook and try to recall the day that I just survived. With Coffeelings, you can jot down your daily thoughts and track your mood on the go by choosing your roast color. At the end of the week, you’ll be able to quickly see how things went with a glance.

Tetrys Depending on your age, you may recall spending hours playing this simple game of block sorting. Now you can get back in on the action with this extension. Click on the icon and a pop-up appears; but the best part is if you need to walk away, it will remember where you left off.

Wait But Why If you love to be informed on random topics and want some humor included in the mix, you will love Wait But Why. Almost every week, the creator, Tim Urban, churns out one really ,long but really awesome, article on a topic.

The Oregon Trail. If you want to go back to your elementary days and revel in the joys of coming down with dysentery, go back to yesteryear with this throwback to The Oregon Trail. You won’t be disappointed.

Drench. Like the classic Rubik’s Cube, Drench provides a way to test your skills by moving colorful tiles in one 14 x 14 square to make it a solid color. Believe me when I say it’s harder than it sounds.

Use Chrome Extensions to Take Brain Breaks

Brain breaks are an important part of learning, and the Chrome browser can help with that. Brain breaks are small mental breaks designed to help us focus. They typically get us moving and allow blood and oxygen to flow to the brain. These breaks allow for a small reset in the day to energize us and increase our productivity. Research conducted over the past 25 years has clearly revealed the value that short, frequent “movement breaks” can have on learning and health.

An invaluable component of the Chrome browser is the Chrome Web Store. The store allows you to search for extensions and apps that can support many areas of learning. There are several extensions that can be added to your Chrome browser that provide easy access to effective brain breaks and other tools that assist with focus. Below are a few extensions to try.

Break Timer

Break Timer allows you to set up customizable breaks and will remind you to take them. With Break Timer, you can customize how long your breaks are and how often you wish to have them. You can choose to be notified with a simple pop-up notification or a full screen window reminder. In addition, a gong sound will play when it’s time to take a break.

Eye Rest

Prevent digital eye strain with a simple reminder to look away from the screen. Eye strain is an unfortunate side-effect of staring at a computer screen for an extended period of time. Simply giving your eyes a brief rest every 20 minutes goes a long way towards preventing eye strain. The Eye Rest extension will remind you to rest your eyes every 20 minutes or you can adjust the time period.

Micro Breaks

Micro Breaks is for you if you spend long hours looking at the Chrome browser. You can set reminders for breathing exercises, brain breaks, stretching exercises, and other activities to prevent digital eye strain. Micro Breaks will gently remind you about the break with an active green icon or desktop notification that can be easily turned on and off with the click of a button.

Mindful Break

This Chrome extension gives you a mindfulness tip and guides you through a short breathing exercise. Under the settings, you can set up how often you would like a mindful break and can be notified with a badge icon or bell sound.

Move It

The Move It extension will keep you active. Simply add the extension to your browser, set the notification interval, and your screen will present you with a random exercise to complete. Once you complete it, hit done and the next exercise will arrive after the designated interval elapses again.

Posture Minder

Posture Minder reminds you to sit up straight with pop-up notifications at specified time intervals. Sitting up straight while at your desk can make a big difference to your posture and overall health. In addition, you can set up a Walk Reminder so you can step away from your device every once in a while.

Take a Break

This extension will provide you with reminders to take a break from your computer. In the settings, make note of your work hours as well as the frequency and duration of the breaks you want to take. You can get notifications in a new tab or on your desktop.

Tiny Break

Tiny Break uses those short moments when you open a new tab in the browser to remind you to take care of your mind, body, and spirit. It will prompt you to do breathing exercises, look away from the screen, and more.

Brain breaks should be considered an investment in your day. We are all spending increasing amounts of time working on our devices, and it’s so easy to lose track of time. Therefore, try one of these extensions and take a break.

Free, Online Resources for Students

In our blog, we often share digital tools and websites for educators to use for teaching and learning. But today, I want to do something a little different. I want to share some great online resources for your students to use to master critical content, create an amazing presentation, or improve their tech skills.

Of course, you’ll probably have to share these with them so that they can begin using them. But that’s a great way to start off each week of school this next year with a New Tool of the Week! (And I won’t tell if you decide to use some of these resources for your own teaching and learning!)

Content Resources for Students

Learning About the Roman World – Check out this amazing and detailed resource for students studying Roman history or literature. ORBIS is the Stanford Geospatial Network Model of the Roman World. It’s goal is to simulate “movement along the principal routes of the Roman road network, the main navigable rivers, and hundreds of sea routes in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and coastal Atlantic, thereby reconstructing the duration and financial cost of travel in antiquity.” This is a resource that you share with your high school students working in pairs or small groups without showing them how to actually use it and let them make and then share their discoveries with the whole class.

Walk the Titanic As It Was – Want to see what the Titanic looked like before it sank? This Unreal Engine video will show you. While it does move pretty fast, it is an excellent resource for understanding the beauty of the ship and its design.

Understand Scale – Grasping the scale of our universe, from the very smallest atom to galaxies, can be a difficult concept for students. But Scale of the Universe 2 makes it easy. (Warning: You can spend a lot of time going down this rabbit hole!) After you click the Start button, the beautiful music beings to play and you are brought to a view at one meter. Slide the bar to the left to go in closer and to the right to expand your view. If you see an object that interests you, simply click on it for more information.

Survive the Century – Give your older students the power to see the consequences of our choices by playing this game. “Survive the Century is a branching narrative game about the political, environmental, and social choices humans will face between 2021 and 2100 as we adapt to the ravages of climate change. This game is a work of fiction, but it is informed by real science.” You act as a newspaper editor who can set what direction and stories the paper will emphasize. As you play, the game tracks things like conflict, temperature, and the economy that are impacted by your decisions. (Please note that this is a text-based game and does require quite a bit of reading to play. I would encourage your students to play in small groups.)

Skill Development Resources

Need a Free Teleprompter? – Presenting to an audience is a skill that students will need throughout their adult lives. But it’s something that takes a lot of practice before it can be mastered. One way to start is by using a teleprompter and a prepared script. TellyPrompt is a free Chrome extension that has you paste text into its editor window and click “Start Presenting.” You can adjust the display font size and the colors, making it easy for anyone to read.

Take Your Typing to the Next Level – While I keep hoping that audio dictation will be as fast and reliable as my typing, I’m afraid that I’ve been disappointed so far. And that’s why keyboarding will continue to be such a critical skill for our students. Keyma.sh is an online multiplayer typing game that allows typists from all around the world to compete against each other and find out who comes on top. Think competitive keyboarding! Students are ranked in a way similar to that of chess masters, earning points for accuracy and speed. If students just want to practice and then see how they did individually, no account is required and they can select to type quotes, from the dictionary, or random. But if they want to see how they fare against others around the world, they will need to create a free account using Google. This site is definitely for older students as it has chat rooms available.

Access Tutorials for Google Tools Inside the Tool – iorad, the Tutorial Builder is a fabulous Chrome extension for adults to use in creating short tool tutorials on anything they can see on their screen; what a time saver! But what really sets it apart for students is that, once the extension is installed, when students access any Google tool, they can also pull up already-crafted lessons on how to use it inside the tool itself. Need to know how to format a title in Google Docs? Simply select that tutorial and it will play step-by-step, reading the slides as you watch and learn.

Brainstorm Your Way to a Solution – Brainstorming is a great skill for students to master. And this free collaborative tool, Brainstormer, is one of the best I’ve used because it goes beyond just gathering a lot of ideas together. One student (or the teacher) creates a new session, identifies the problem to be solved, and shares the link with others. Next, everyone enters in as many ideas as they can on the topic. Finally, and this is the important step that is often left out of other brainstorming tools, they vote on their favorite ideas. In this way, they end up with a few great ideas to start implementing immediately. Brainstormer gives hints and tips along the way to help you better achieve good solutions and even allows you to set a timer for the brainstorming. No registration or account is required to use this resource.

Did everybody survive the school year? You’re reading this so, I will assume all is well. I’ve tried to only curate non-educational related finds this month so that you can have a much-needed mental break. However, some of you out there can’t stop the wheels from turning and will figure out a way to use these new additions in the classroom.

Disclaimer: These may or may not decrease your productivity. The best work is done at the last minute anyway, right?

Chrome Extensions to Try

Emoji Keyboard by JoyPixels. If you’re a fan of emojis, install this extension immediately after reading this blog. Sometimes, an emoji can say it better than anything else!

Wonder #ChooseKind. If you’re like me and are tired of the negativity that you run into online, try this extension. It was inspired by the movie Wonder and changes the way you see the web by replacing it with positive and uplifting words. It’s great for scrolling through your social feeds.

reCollect. No shame in my game! I fully admit to binge watching and the pandemic helped me fully embrace that part of my life. If you’re in this boat, you’ll love this find to help you easily keep track of your favorite shows. Plus, it can sync between all of your devices.

Giphy Tabs. Without getting into the debate of whether it’s pronounced “gif” or “jif” (it’s jif, like the peanut butter, by the way, according to the creator), install this one if you are a GIF fan. Whenever you open a new tab, you’ll be greeted with a random GIF.

First Line. This extension is about as simple as things get. If you’re in the mood for some random literature, just click for a random first sentence of a book.

Pipey the Piper. Remember back in the day when Microsoft Word had that fun paper clip guy who would pop up on your screen and help you or give tips? If you miss that guy, you’ll gladly welcome Pipey into your life as he appears on screen with unique advice only he can give.

Foodgawker. It’s a bit like Pinterest, but only for food. Here’s your chance to explore and curate in one place all those recipes that you hope to get around to making someday.

WikiGame. I found myself quite entertained with this one. How fast can you get from one Wiki page to the next by clicking on appropriate links that may lead you to the desired site?

Recording Video into Google Slides

Working with video can be difficult. While screen recording tools have become popular with remote learning, we face daunting obstacles. One of those is screen recording instructions for student learners. How do you record only what they need and not one more thing? In this blog entry, we’ll explore some tips and G Suite EDU tools for video recording.

Tips for Screen Recording Student Directions

Managing expectations for video quality is important. When I start out, my goal isn’t to create a fantastic, awesome professional video. My goal is to keep the message concise and say no more than what students need. That’s a difficult proposition. When you start making videos, you may think as I once did that a video must be many parts. I like this perspective:

There is no need or expectation for you to create a professional-quality production. You can use titles, opening and closing credits, music and/or special effects. It is best to leave those to Hollywood directors.

Further suggestions worth taking into account:

Get directions straight in your head first.
Limit them to no more than three (perfect) to five steps (long).
Divide directions up and match them to a task.
Keep your videos bite-sized, ranging from three to six minutes.
Insert yourself into the video at the start and then only after for meaningful points.

There are other tips you can consider. Explore TCEA’s Screencasting for Educators self-paced, online course for more. Now let’s look at G Suite EDU friendly video tools.

G Suite EDU Video Tools

For many G Suite EDU users, Screencastify is at the top of the heap for video recording. The Screencastify Unlimited version includes Chromebook-friendly recording. For educators, the price is $29. Non-educators must pay $49.

What’s more, Screencastify Unlimited offers a super video editing environment. Not only can you trim your video anywhere, you can crop video like a photo. That is, you can capture a part of your video’s area and cut the rest out. That’s an amazing editing feature I have not seen elsewhere. Screencastify Submit is a nice addition that supports student video creation and editing.

Screencastify Unlimited’s Editor is amazing, offering trim and crop features.

Need a free alternative without the super editing tools? Flipgrid’s screen recorder offers options for Chromebook-only educators. Nimbus Screenshot offers another free option, but most avoid Nimbus due to its less than obvious interface.

Record to Slides

Clay Smith‘s Record to Slides may be the tool that makes it happen. Instead of a screen recorder, you may need a moment to share your thoughts. You, the camera, and your students.

Record a quick set of instructions with Record to Slides. Videos will appear right on the slide you are speaking about. What a great way to personalize the slide. What’s more, all videos are auto-stored in the “RecordToSlides” folder at the top level of your Google Drive, as shown below:

Parting Thoughts

Record to Slides was easy for me, and I suspect will be easy for students, although you saw me run into challenges with my video recording. While you could use Screencastify or Flipgrid, the simplest tool for the job is often the one to go with. And it doesn’t cost anything.

Make Audio More Accessible with YouTube Playback Tools

“How can I speed up playback of this YouTube video?” I asked myself while watching a video tutorial. Like many others, I want to listen at twice the speed of normal playback. Being able to speed up video playback can be an accessibility issue, too. In this blog entry, we’ll explore a few Chrome extensions that accelerate video playback.

Before we do that, let’s learn about how hearing works faster than our other senses.

Learning at the Speed of Sound

“I love Voxer. I speed up playback and I can listen to my VoxerChat fast,” said a friend of mine. If you follow a Voxer chat, speeding up is a must. That’s because it’s analogous to a Twitter chat. Voxer is an audio-based asynchronous chat. Our brains recognize sound in 0.05 seconds. In less than millionth of a second, our brain senses changes of sound (source).

When our brains learn a new word, they begin a two-step process. This process allows us to build on previous learned content and that prior knowledge makes it easier to learn new information (source). The process includes the following steps:

Learn how a sound corresponds to a new word
Understand different versions of the word (e.g. accents, pronunciations) mean the same

In the second step, human brains learn to categorize sound together. This makes it possible for our brains to process people speaking at a rate of three words a second.

A final point to keep in mind:

The faster the stimulus reaches the brain, the faster it processes the signal. Researchers have confirmed that reaction to sound is faster than reaction to light. Most people speak at a speed of 150 words per minute.

Speed Up (or Slow Down) YouTube Playback

As a Voxer user, I kept looking for a way to speed up YouTube video tutorials. Sure enough, there are various Chrome browser extensions that will do the job. These can save you time. Often, listening to video can be more effective than watching it.

You haven’t heard your favorite music video until you speed up playback. This can be a boon when listening to webinars, lectures, and online content (e.g. TED Talks).

Pitch Shifter works like a charm. The slider makes it easy to adjust to your preferred speed.

Here are several Chrome extensions that can speed up video playback. I tried a few and these are the ones that worked well for me.

Each of these works in a different way, but are accessible via your Chrome extensions. Of the three, Pitch Shifter and Playback are my favorites, with YouTube Speeder a close third. The reason why is that Pitch Shifter and Playback offer a slide bar you can adjust on the fly.
