A Beginner’s Guide to Attending TCEA

by Macee Hall Greer

Stepping into the TCEA Convention & Exposition for the first time can feel like a whirlwind—trust me, I was a newbie myself just last year! When you arrive at TCEA, you’re embarking on a five-day professional learning experience that will ignite your passion, expand your toolkit, and leave you feeling inspired. But, it’s important to outline your priorities and must-do activities before you get there!

Whether you’re a classroom teacher, campus leader, instructional coach, librarian, or tech pro, this beginner’s guide is packed with friendly tips to help you show up prepared and ready to make the most of TCEA.

1. Register early to save on registration and travel costs.

If at all possible, you’re going to want to register online prior to the event. While onsite registration is available, lines can get long and some badge types (like one-day badges) could sell out early. Plus, on-site registration actually costs more than registering before the event. Registering ahead of time means less waiting and more learning from the moment you step into the convention center.

2. Pack with a purpose.

Now you may be thinking, “Macee, why did you put packing so high up on the list?” Well, let me tell you… it was neither accidental nor coincidental. If you’ve ever been to a convention before, you know that you’re guaranteed to get your daily steps in. But, if you’re a first-timer, you may not be aware that a comfy pair of walking shoes can be a life saver. Plan out the days that you’ll be attending—making sure to account for walking to and from dinner or local attractions—and pack clothes that work with your agenda.

BONUS: Make sure to bring layers, like a sweater or light jacket. Winter weather in Texas spans from ice storms to 80-degree days, but the convention center can get a little chilly either way!

3. Come with your goals in mind, but stay openminded.

With 700+ sessions spanning everything from STEAM and leadership to digital citizenship, math, ELA, and more, TCEA has something for every educator. You can personalize a schedule that fits your goals in the TCEA app, or let the excitement guide you to unexpected gems.

4. Schedule in Exhibit Hall time.

The TCEA Exhibit Hall isn’t just a place to see cool tech—it’s where you’ll meet hundreds of vendors, test tools firsthand, and get answers to real questions from real people. You’ll walk away with solutions you can actually use — plus inspiration that sessions alone sometimes can’t deliver. Think of it as a hands-on playground for educators!

5. Network like you mean it!

One of my absolute favorite parts of TCEA is the people. Thousands of passionate educators from every role and region come together to share in the excitement, innovation, and learning. Talk to folks in line, at lunch, or between sessions—you’ll be amazed at what you discover!

6. Utilize the TCEA app.

Did you know that TCEA has a dedicated app, designed to make your convention experience even better? It lets you bookmark sessions, build a personal agenda, and keep everything in one spot. And if you want help creating a schedule, there’s often support staff and veteran attendees ready to lend a hand. Just look for the help desks located on each floor (and stop by to say “hi” if you see me working)!

7. Invest in your future, and earn credit for doing so.

TCEA doesn’t just inspire you—it credits you. You can earn continuing professional education (CPE) hours and even your choice of six microcredentials in focused areas by completing session pathways. These badges and hours can bolster your resume or professional portfolio.
