Have you ever spent hours creating the perfect presentation structure, only to watch your students struggle with formatting rather than focusing on content? Canva templates offer a solution that can transform how your students demonstrate their learning while saving valuable classroom time. By providing pre-structured frameworks, you can help students showcase their understanding without getting bogged down in design decisions.

The Power of Templates in Education

There are several benefits of creating and sharing templates with students. In canva there are several template types you can use including presentations, posters, worksheets, whiteboards, infographics, flashcards, comic strips, graphic organizers, storyboards, story books, websites, videos, daily agendas, newsletters. Here are just a few of the ways that this method supports students:

  • Structured guidance – Giving a template to a student helps them organize their thoughts and assignments logically helping to build confidence.
  • Reduce cognitive load – Providing a template that already has an acceptable structure to follow means that students can focus their attention on the content instead of having the added expectation of being skilled at design and layout which is most likely not one of the standards they are expected to learn in your content area.
  • Saves time – Though it does save time for the student by removing additional tasks to demonstrate mastery, it also saves you time when it comes to grading and peer reviews.
  • Promotes differentiation – Once you have one template done, you can easily tweak it to make another template (or two) to better differentiate for your students providing a variety of supports that some students may need more than others.
  • Accommodates accessibility needs – Templates can include proper headings and hierarchies for screen readers, include pre-set color combinations for better contrast, and include built-in alt text prompts for images.

Finding and Using Canva Templates

That is great but where can you find templates in Canva that are already made and ready to tweak, share, and use in your classroom? There are several locations you can find templates for Canva depending on what type of template you are working on. Here are three locations you might find most helpful:

  • Education Presentations – Tons of education-themed presentations allow you to jump start your creative process and get to the content faster!
  • Student Portfolios – Tweak one of these portfolios and share with your students (or select a few from them to choose from) so they can start documenting their work and progress. Click on the sidebar filter to narrow down the style, color, grade level, and more.
  • School Posters – Create posters to instruct, inform and inspire by tweaking these great resources. Lots to choose from!

Implementing Canva Templates

Begin by creating a Canva for Education account using your school email address. This license allows you all the benefits of Canva Pro but for free…plus you can invite your students to your class and have them make use of Canva through your account. Next locate the template you want to use (or create one from scratch). Now all you have to do is:

  1. Click on the Share button (top right corner)
  2. Click on the Template Link icon
  3. Click the Create Template Link
  4. Copy the template link and share as needed with your students

You can delete the link at any time which prevents users from accessing the file – similar to changing the share settings of a Google Doc. Below you can see the icon for the template link in Canva – the image on the left indicates the file is not shared while the image on the right indicates that the file has been shared as a template and a URL generated for others to access.

Subject-Specific Applications

If you have not used templates before, you may be wondering how you would use them in your content area. Here are just a few of the ways that you can make use of templates with your students.

Science
Infographics: Use an infographic template for students to visually summarize the parts of a cell or the life cycle of a butterfly.
Posters: Have students create safety posters using Canva’s poster templates to display proper lab safety protocols.
Videos: Encourage students to record and edit video summaries of their experiments using video templates.		 Social Studies
Presentations: Provide a base template for a presentation on key events of westward expansion or another historical topic. Students personalize it with relevant text and images.
Comic Strips: Assign students to create a comic strip that tells the story of a significant historical event or figure.
Storyboards: Have students plan and organize a digital museum exhibit on a historical era using a storyboard template.		 English Language Arts
Portfolios: Share portfolio templates for students to document their essays, poems, and projects throughout the year.
Graphic Organizers: Provide templates for brainstorming story ideas, character development, or analyzing themes in literature.
Flashcards: Assign students to create flashcards to learn and review vocabulary words or literary devices.
Mathematics
Worksheets: Share editable worksheets for solving equations, graphing functions, or practicing word problems.
Infographics: Assign students to create infographics explaining a mathematical concept, such as the Pythagorean theorem or data trends in statistics.
Whiteboards: Collaborate on solving problems in real-time using Canva’s whiteboard templates.		 Physical Education
Posters: Students create motivational posters for a healthy lifestyle or exercise routine.
Worksheets: Share templates for tracking fitness goals or recording data during fitness tests.
Daily Agendas: Use agenda templates to plan and share weekly fitness challenges or activities.		 Foreign Languages
Flashcards: Students create flashcards for vocabulary practice with visual aids and translations.
Comic Strips: Let students practice writing in the target language by creating short comics.
Newsletters: Have students create newsletters in the foreign language covering cultural events or topics.

Best Practices and Tips

Here are a few tips to consider when creating/sharing templates with students in order to make it the best experience for your students (and for you):

  • Include clear instructions within the template. Since you cannot have text off to the side of the work area, consider adding a page at the beginning that includes instructions, a rubric, and/or any other information that students may need.
  • Add placeholders showing expected content type. This may be a scaffolding opportunity in which you provide these placeholders the first few times your students use templates and then you taper off and allow them to add placeholders as they see fit.
  • Consider file size as some students may have limited internet. If students are working on these on their phone or at home, having lots of graphics or elements in the template may increase the file size making it more cumbersome for some students to efficiently access and use.

The strategic use of Canva templates can revolutionize how students demonstrate their learning while building essential digital literacy skills. Start small, perhaps with a single unit or project, and expand your template use as you and your students become more comfortable with the process.

Remember: The goal isn’t to restrict creativity but to provide a foundation that allows students to focus on content mastery while developing their design skills at an appropriate pace.

Canva Updates for July 2024

Do you love Canva? It offers a wealth of digital design tools that make the worst of our work look better. But keeping up to date with Canva and other digital tools can be tough. Let’s take a look at some of the upcoming changes making an impact in schools and offices. You need to pay attention, especially if you’re a long-time Canva user.

The Canvas of Creativity

Canva is gearing up for a significant update to its sharing features. These changes are set to take effect on July 31st, 2024. Like the Google links security update, they seek to enhance online safety. Per Canva’s announcement:

“We’re introducing several improvements to how designs are shared, which include renaming and enhancing share links, as well as introducing new features for websites.”

Let’s break down these changes and what they mean for you.

A New Look for Sharing

View-only links will soon become “public view links.” The new public view links will display a badge showing the status of the design’s link. This badge will display who exactly has access to the shared document. Also, some new websites options are being rolled out.

When you login to Canva, you will be prompted to make a decision. Canva has already checked which of your share links will be affected and will ask what you want to do with them: keep them as they are or convert them into public view links. After July 31, 2024, the share links won’t work anymore unless you take action to ensure they remain accessible.

Website Wizardry

Making websites via Canva isn’t something I do often. Google Sites has me covered and remains my favorite website design tool on a budget. But Canva is upping its game with the introduction of a fresh menu and new features. You can see an example of a presentation as a website here, featuring the Amazing Lesson Design Outline (ALDO). Here’s a Canva doc as a website:

The new features include the following:

  • Custom domains
  • Password protection options
  • New scrolling functionality

Who knows what else they may add? What new features do you want to see for websites? Being able to drag and drop media, the same way you are able to do in Presentation docs, would be a worthwhile addition, in my opinion.

It’s the end of the year and time to recognize students for a variety of achievements. Yes, there will be an awards ceremony for the school in which students will be recognized for perfect attendance, UIL achievements, honor roll, etc. But typically, only a few students in your class will be recognized. Why not have your own in-class awards ceremony and print a certificate for each student? Some awards can be serious and some can be funny. Let’s explore some interesting technology-focused awards to consider for students. What’s more, you can use it as a content-sharing hub. This empowers you to reveal the positive stories happening in your academic community. Let’s discuss the importance of branding and amplifying your message before looking at some tips for doing so.

Brand and Amplify Your Message

“You know great achievements happen at your school. Unfortunately, many of those stories stop at the school doors,” say the authors of BrandED. Eric Sheninger and Trish Rubin go on to suggest you:

  • Brand yourself as your school’s storyteller-in-chief and amplifier
  • Improve relationships with key stakeholders
  • Foster a positive culture extending and influencing beyond the school grounds (source)

While they offer many more suggestions, these are three you can take advantage of right now. The problem? You may not be sure how to get this done. A whisper-quiet announcement just won’t do the trick. Amplify your voice with social media tools! Use them to build relationships with others.

To amplify your message, follow this checklist:

Make the Commitment

Are you ready to commit to being a storyteller-in-chief? Print out and sign this commitment form. You will see it has four key tenets:

Now that you have an idea of what’s expected, as outlined in the commitment form, let’s explore how to get that done. Of course, you will be using Canva, a digital tool that’s free for schools. Canva’s Magic Studio brings powerful AI components to help you save time, spread your message, and create beautiful content easily.

Tip #1: Make Something Quick

Your smartphone is a fantastic, easy way to capture student and staff success. As storyteller-in-chief, it’s an invaluable aid to you. This can be a video interview with students, staff, or parents sharing. Pick stories that elevate the conversation and inspire others. Additionally, you can create a photo collage of learning and teaching as it happens. In a video or collage, you can show the following:

  • Students working together. Take pictures where students’ faces aren’t visible, blur them out for privacy, or send a photo/video release form home to get parent permission.
  • Teachers planning a lesson or event. Capture teachers working hard on a lesson or project. Explain how it connects to student learning and growth.
  • A parent highlighting a need or challenge that the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is focusing on. The PTA, also known as the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) or Campus Support Team (CST), may be planning a fundraiser event or instructional initiative.

Don’t be afraid to celebrate actions, no matter how small, that move your campus culture and students forward. Here is a sample media release form that is customizable to meet your needs:

Tip #2: Create Your Media Sharing Templates

Now that you have collected your media in the form of video and images, you’re ready to put them together. Canva’s Magic Studio makes it easy to “switch” the format of a document. You can start with a short document write-up with inserted images, then ask it to change it to any option shown:

More importantly, you can export to a custom size, including Instagram or Facebook. You can follow the steps shown below and then post to Instagram using a Canva-generated QR code. Once in Instagram, you can add music to your image. This simplifies the process of posting images with context.

Then, you can post to Instagram from your phone. You only need to have both the Canva and Instagram apps loaded on your smartphone. This is what that post will look like:

This means you can create in Canva and take advantage of Magic Switch to create multiple types of social media posts. Your social media options include Instagram posts and reels, Facebook videos, and more. You can also use Magic Switch’s Translate option to translate your English document into any language your end users need.

Tip #3: Framing Your Video Creations

Use Canva to upload your audio, photos, or video. Then turn them into a video collage, Facebook video, or Reel. You can add music or other audio by clicking “Elements” in the left menu and searching “music” or whatever audio type you’re looking for under the “Audio” tab.

You can upload your own audio, or you can record yourself by clicking “Uploads” in the left menu and then “Record yourself.” Beat Sync will time your audio to sync with the different pages and elements in your video.

Three Bonus Tools

Ready to fill in or modify a PDF form or document? You can use the Canva PDF editor, a free tool that allows you to directly edit a PDF document! Even if the PDF is a scanned document, you can modify the text. If your PDF is primarily pictures, you’ll be able to use photo editing tools like Magic Eraser or Grab to adjust images.

Diversify Your Options

With the inconstancy of social media options, you can use Canva’s Magic Studio to create and share content in a variety of social media formats. Use its Magic Studio AI tools to enhance photos, videos, and audio. Here are a few TechNotes articles for further reading:

Canva’s Charts App: Easily Design Beautiful Charts and Graphs

Wish you could create breathtaking charts, diagrams, and graphs? Blend beautiful landscapes into the background of your graph? Show children learning on a graph featuring student growth? Step aside, Google and Microsoft. Canva’s Charts app puts powerful tools at your disposal. What’s more, this app makes it easy to import comma-delimited (CSV) lists! You can pull data from spreadsheet or database exports, and then generate documents, graphs, or charts. Let’s explore how to:

  • Use Canva’s Charts app
  • Customize your graphs and charts
  • Create specialized graphs
  • Import rows of data from a spreadsheet or database for mail merge purposes
  • Generate parent letters and certificates via mail merge

Using Canva’s Charts App

Canva dedicates an entire website to graph templates. It’s a gateway to all the exciting graph and chart templates Canva offers. Per the website, you can:

  • Choose from more than 20 types of graphs
  • Embed your graph in presentations and reports
  • Publish, share, or download your high-resolution graph
  • Fast-track development with professional templates

Of course, Canva’s Charts app can do so much more. Let’s take a look at the Charts app, found in the Canva sidebar menu under the Apps icon:

You already have a ton of templates for charts and graphs available in Canva’s Elements. But Canva’s Charts app also offers you customizable charts with data tables. I feature them in my video walkthrough:

Customize Charts and Graphs

You can customize the data in your charts and graphs via their accompanying data table. Be aware that there are many graphs in the Elements –> Graphics section that you cannot adjust via a data table. If you want to adjust these, you’ll be “eyeballing it” or estimating instead.

For more precise charts based on data, you will need to rely on searching “charts” in the Elements. These do come with a data table. These charts are usually in shades of blue but the colors are customizable. As you can see from the screenshot, the data table appears when you click on the editable chart on the canvas.

You can also create specialized graphs, such as progress bars, progress dials, and pictograms. Let’s take a closer look.

Create Specialized Charts and Graphs

With customizable charts in Canva’s Charts App, you can create a progress bar with precision:

Another fun chart to work with is the pictogram. You have a variety of icons to choose from. As you can see in the screenshot below, pictograms resemble what they signify. So it’s great that Canva offers this option.

Canva Certificates and Letters

Need to send home a progress report, or print off certificates of achievement for your students or colleagues? Canva makes it easy! All you need to do is:

  1. Prepare your merge document (e.g. certificate, document, handout, etc.), and
  2. Have your data in a CSV file or Google Sheet

You can use one of two apps to get CSV data into Canva for use. The first is to rely on the Chart app. It has a built-in import tool. The second is the Bulk Create app, which is available via Apps in your Canva sidebar.

This short video demonstrates how I use these two approaches. You will see certificate creation first. Then, I create a chart using data exported as a CSV file. It’s easier than you think, and what a time-saver!

The Canva Charts App Makes Things Easy

It’s amazing to see how easy it is to create beautiful graphs and charts with Canva. With the ability to import data from spreadsheet programs like Excel and Sheets, you can generate a nice chart or series of certificates. How will use the Canva Charts app? Share your ideas in the comments!

Five Canva Hacks for Fun, Creativity, and Productivity

Are you getting started with Canva? It’s an amazing digital creation tool. If you’ve not yet been verified for a free Canva for Education account, I’d highly recommend doing so! Once you’re in and exploring all the amazing features, you might appreciate these productivity hacks I stumbled upon as I got to know Canva. Let’s take a look at a few tricks on everything from editing your uploaded PDFs to masking images.

Did you know?

A few colleagues didn’t know that Canva has an app that works on Windows or Mac computers. Using the Canva app can improve your creation speed. I knew there was an app for smartphones and tablets, but I didn’t know there was one for my desktop. It’s now my favorite way to interact with Canva!

Get Canva’s Desktop App

Hack #1: Importing Presentation Templates to Canva

Want to import amazing content from SlidesMania into Canva? Sure, Canva has tons of great templates, but they don’t have everything. SlidesMania, SlideCarnival, and SlidesGo offer a variety of presentation templates you can use within Canva. Didn’t find what you’re looking for? Don’t worry, there are plenty of other sources of templates available online!

With that in mind, from your Canva Projects home page, you can import presentation templates you find elsewhere.

  1. Click Add new in the top right corner.
  2. Select Import from app in the drop-down menu.
  3. Import your saved template.

What you may not know is that Canva supports other import formats besides PowerPoint. This is good because exports of PowerPoint files don’t often import well into Canva. You may need a simpler, intermediary format, like an ODP presentation. But the simpler the format, the more likely fancy animations will fail. That’s alright, though, since Canva offers its own magic.

Hack #2: Hide, Blur, or Add Effects to Pages

Hiding presentation slides isn’t anything new. You can do it in Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides. But if you “skip slide” in Google Slides, the skipped slides are visible if you share the link. In PowerPoint Online, the skip slide will obscure the slide from presentation view. But, you can still print them to PDF to see any slides the author chose to hide. Canva makes it easy to hide presentation slides (called “pages” in Canva), and you can hide many at once!

  1. Click the arrow in the bottom center of the editor to Show pages in your presentation.
  2. Select the page you wish to hide (it will outline in purple) or press and hold control to select multiple pages.
  3. Hover over a page and click the three dots in the top right corner.
  4. Choose the Hide pages option in the menu.

A neat feature in Present mode on Canva? You can use Magic Shortcuts to blur content or add effects. To enter Present mode, just click the full screen icon in the bottom right corner of the editor.

You can “hide” content in a presentation by blurring it until you’re ready to discuss it, and you can add special effects like bubbles and confetti! To access this menu in Present mode, click the keyboard icon in the bottom right of the screen.

Hack #3: Clean Out Uploaded Items

Want to easily clean out your uploaded items in Canva? Use the Select items tool to choose multiple items.

  1. Click Uploads in the side panel.
  2. Select an image and click the three dots in the top right corner.
  3. Choose Select items in the menu.
  4. Select all items you’d like to delete.
  5. Click the trash can at the bottom of the Uploads pane to send them all to trash.

This allows you to keep your uploaded items area tidy. Trashing items from your upload tray does not remove them from any documents you put them into. That means, unless you are planning to use those items again, it’s fine to select and delete them.

And, remember, items stay in the Trash for thirty days. If you need to restore a trashed item, you can always recover it:

Hack #4: Edit PDFs with Canva

Wish you could edit a PDF? While one of my favorite tools is PDF Reader by XODO for forms, give Canva a try. You can drag and drop the PDF file into the Canva Projects home area. When you start to drag it over, it will look like this:

Then, once Canva has uploaded your PDF file, you can begin editing it right away. What’s amazing is that Canva converts the text in a PDF to become editable, so you’re able to make changes and adjustments.

All the text in this PDF is edit-friendly. If I need to add content and images or make corrections, I can do that.

Hack #5: Masking Images with Frames

Wish you had an easy way to drop an image or photo into a shape? Canva offers pre-created “frames” you can use. These allow you to mask an image, hiding parts you don’t want people to see. The benefit? You can frame an image into a particular shape, like a cut-out.

To frame an image, first open a Canva project document or make a new one. Then, select Elements in the side panel. You’ll notice a menu at the top of the elements pane. Choose Frames to explore all the options. You’ll find a variety of them to choose from:

Add one of the frames to your document, then import an image or find one in Canva’s Elements. Drag the image into the frame, and it will merge to take the frame’s shape. Double click the image to move it within the frame.

While there are various programs that allow you to do this (Google Slides has a “crop to shape” option), Canva offers a variety of frames. There are more frames available via Mockups in Canva’s Apps area. Watch the video below to see how you could use them, along with Canva’s QR Code generator, to put your QR code or image on anything!

Wouldn’t it be neat to match any image to any shape? Or convert any simple shape to a frame you could use? There are ways, but that will have to wait for another day.

Exploring Canva Whiteboard as a Jamboard Alternative

Wish you had an easy-to-use online whiteboard? With Google moving Jamboard to read-only mode on October 1, 2024, you may be seeking out an alternative. What digital, online whiteboard will you use with your students instead? If you are a “less is more” kind of person, you may be looking for easier tools to use than those suggested by Google (e.g., Figjam, LucidSpark, Miro). Let’s look at one you may want to know more about: Canva Whiteboard.

What is Canva Whiteboard?

The simple-to-use Canva Whiteboard is already a part of the toolset you know and love in Canva. Canva Whiteboard offers a simple solution with powerful components, like built-in timers and more. Once you start using it, you may find yourself thanking Google for pushing you out of the Jamboard nest. Canva offers so many delightful features that are free to verified educators, and its whiteboard tool is a worthy replacement for Jamboard. Let’s walk through some of the Jamboard-compatible features Canva Whiteboard offers. Here’s a quick video overview:

Import Images or Presentations

Save your Google Jamboards as images for an easy upload to Canva Whiteboard. Or, upload any image file you’d like to use (keeping licensing and copyright in mind, of course)!

Here’s one of my favorite activities as a Google Slide, the 3-2-1 activity (3 main ideas/words, 2 supporting details/phrases, and 1 question/quote). You can vary this activity in many ways! I can download it as an image and then upload it to my whiteboard in Canva for students to annotate. You can do this with any image you save or find.

Get a few other Google Slides activities here that can be exported and use in an online whiteboard of your choice.

Yes, you can download presentations as PNG or image files and upload them to Canva, but wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to? In Canva Whiteboard, you can import a presentation straight from Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or Dropbox and turn it into a whiteboard.

  1. Click the menu icon in the top left corner.
  2. Open Projects.
  3. Click Add New in the top right corner.
  4. Choose Import from app in the drop-down menu.
  5. Choose to import from Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox.

You can change it to a whiteboard in Canva by right-clicking a slide and choosing Expand to Whiteboard in the drop-down menu.

Lock the Background

In Canva, like in Jamboard, you can lock the background. This ensures your students won’t be able to move the background around as they are using the whiteboard. Click the image and select the lock in the toolbar, or right-click the image and select the lock in the drop-down menu.

Duplicate a Page

Now that you have your whiteboard slide looking the way you want, you’re ready to duplicate it.

When you present or share your screen, as you’ll see in a bit, these pages will become available as slides. Students can write on these slides with the Draw tools in Canva. And, since you locked the background, that should help keep certain elements unmoveable, as you can see below:

Additionally, you can see students working live in the document. This makes it easier to monitor progress.

Everything ready to go? Now, you can bring students into the equation to add comments and annotations. To share the Canva Whiteboard, use the Share button that appears in the top right corner of the screen.

As you can see in the image above, the “Can Comment” is enabled, but you will want to change that to Edit. Remember, you can also share a presentation in Canva for groups of students to work on!

Note: If whiteboard vandalism is a concern, then you can take a more limited approach. That is, you can share the link to a whiteboard with only that group of students or an individual student.

Share Your Whiteboard as a Template

If you’d like to share your whiteboards as editable templates with other educators, you can do so by clicking Share and then clicking the Template Link option. This makes sharing your whiteboard designs easy. The only catch? To edit the template, you need to have a Canva account. That’s not a bad thing for colleagues since Canva is free for educators and students.

Did You Know?

Canva offers a desktop app that will run on your computer. This means you can work on your computer (e.g. Windows/Mac) with Canva creations outside of your browser. Get the app.

Add Text and Content to a Whiteboard

Once your students have access to Canva Whiteboard via the Share link, they can do so much. I almost wish Canva Whiteboard offered a limited set of tools for their whiteboard or a toggle switch for the tools available to keep choices simple for younger students.

Oh, not real magic like wizards and dragons, but the ability to bend reality to your will. That’s right, with Canva’s Magic Studio, you can adapt images and content to your will. The Elements of Canva Magic Studio

Canva has organized AI-powered tools into Magic Studio and they are adding more every day. These tools distinguish themselves in that you can use them to create and transform images, text, and video rather than just edit or adapt them. A new offering includes Classroom Magic, not featured in the elements chart below due to it being so new. Let’s review these AI-powered tools one by one.

Tool #1: Magic Switch

Ever wish you could easily transform a presentation into a blog post? Or turn a Facebook post into an Instagram Reel? Or perhaps you’d like to turn a presentation slide into a whiteboard. Or translate content from your native language to another on the fly. Well, you can do it all in Canva with Magic Switch. It’s like having a genie that turns your designs into a summary, blog post, or song, and then translates them into another language! Take a look at all these options that allow you to transform one type of content into another seamlessly.

Here’s what Magic Switch’s Translate option looks like:

That’s right, Magic Switch makes all these tasks possible from within Canva. No need to go anywhere else! Transform into Doc is one of my favorite tools because you can turn a presentation into a blog post, summary, or really, anything.

For example, I asked it to transform my Canva presentation, You Can Do Magic, into a blog post. You can read it in its entirety, but for now, here’s a brief snippet. It isn’t quite perfect, but it’s easy to improve on:

Ever wondered if there’s a tool that could solve all your design problems? The answer is a resounding yes! Meet Canva Magic Studio, a platform that promises to revolutionize the way we create, design, and animate. This article by Miguel Guhlin takes you through every nook and corner of Canva Magic Studio, helping you understand what it can do for you.

You might ask, “What’s the magic?” It’s the suite of powerful tools that come with Magic Studio. They include Magic Switch, Magic Media, Magic Design. Magic Media, powered by DALL*E, Imagen, and others, is a creative powerhouse that can generate an image or video from a text prompt. You may be familiar with prompting AI to generate something for you already. You write a text prompt and watch it become a beautiful (or not) piece of art. With Magic Media, you tap into image-generation tools to create an image OR video. Just type in the description for the image or video you want, and voila! You get a result.

Here is an example video generated by Magic Media. Can you imagine using tools like these to simulate a science lab? Imagine the possibilities.

Tool #3: Magic Design

Now that you’ve seen a few new additions to Canva, you may find yourself oohing and aahing over this one. My colleague, Emily Horn, recently wrote about it on TechNotes. You can use Magic Design to upload images or videos, or you can use your previously uploaded media, and generate fully editable and customizable videos, graphics, templates, and various types of content. Type in a prompt or upload your media, and choose from several designs.

What’s more, it can even add music to generated videos. Take a look at one example video I created in Canva using royalty-free images from Unsplash.

Tools #4-8: Image Editing Tools

Have you labored under the yoke of difficult image editing apps? If you’re like me, your creations never quite achieve your vision of what an image should look like. The creation falls short of my imagination. With these powerful image editing tools, image editing is an artist’s dream. The image editing tool suite includes:

  • Tool #4: Magic Edit
  • Tool #5: Magic Eraser
  • Tool #6: Magic Grab
  • Tool #7: Grab Text
  • Tool #8: Magic Expand

Each lets you do something fantastic. My favorite is Magic Grab, which makes moving a person or object from an image easy. Consider this image of this TCEA participant:

Canva makes it child’s play to remove an element from an image and place it elsewhere, as shown below:

Another benefit? The empty space left by the removal of the object in the original image gets filled in.

Not only does it grab objects, but it also grabs text! For those who have been dropping text-filled images into Google Keep or OneNote to grab text, I have news for you. Not only does Canva grab the text, but it also makes it completely editable. The text becomes available for your use in the document immediately. What a time-saver!

Want to crop images but the result is less than perfect? Magic Expand can smooth the rough edges of an inexpert image crop. And, Magic Eraser makes it easy to remove parts of an image.

Tool #9: Magic Write

Magic Write is an AI-powered text editor. It can understand your “voice” and create text that is similar to what you would write yourself. You can start with a prompt to get a first draft, summarize text, or elaborate a short text into a longer one.

You’ve already gotten a hint of what’s possible with Canva’s AI-powered writing help. Magic Write can go a step further, taking any piece of writing you have and improving it. Access this tool inside any block text will go or from a Canva word processing doc:

I challenged Magic Write to put together a description of what it can do.

Prompt: Write a magical, mystical description of what Magic Write can do with references to wizards, magic, and dragons.

Generated Text: Magic Write is a wizard of words, a master of the mystical art of writing. With a flick of its pen, it can conjure up the most fantastical stories, weaving together tales of dragons and knights, of wizards and magic. Its words flow like a river of enchantment, carrying the reader on a journey through lands of wonder and adventure. Read the rest of this amazing composition.

This piece of AI-generated writing matched my directions. Although there’s some room for improvement, it wouldn’t take much to get this up to standard.

Tool #10: Magic Animate

Magic Animate brings life to your static designs. Add motion to designs or images and choose from an assortment of animation styles. It’s the perfect tool to make your designs more engaging. Take a heart shape, add the pulse animation to it, and watch it pump. Combine it with a Canva frame to put the face of your favorite wizard or witch inside a heart, and watch your heart beat away.

Is More Canva Magic Headed Our Way?

Canva isn’t done innovating on Magic Studio. A few days after writing this blog entry, I stumbled across #11 – Magic Morph. With the Magic Morph app, you can select an element or text. Then, type in what you want that element or text to look like and wait for Canva to work its magic!
