The Library 2.017 Worldwide Virtual Conference from the San Jose State University School of Information is offering another outstanding virtual learning event on October 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. CDT. This workshop for librarians focuses on the popular topic of makerspaces.
Makerspaces are popping up at libraries more and more these days. These creative outlets for tinkering, collaborating, problem solving, and learning provide a new dynamic for library services. Just like the individual projects made, no two library makerspaces are the same. During this free web conference, attendees will investigate how library makerspaces can foster community partnerships and provide a space for patrons to innovate through hands-on learning.
Confirmed keynote speakers for this exciting event include:
- Heather Moorefield-Lang, Assistant Professor, School of Library and Information Science, University of South Carolina
- Dr. Kyungwon Koh, Assistant Professor, School of Library and Information Studies, The University of Oklahoma
- Dr. June Abbas, Professor, School of Library and Information Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, The University of Oklahoma
Registration is free and will give you access to the live event and the event recordings, in case you can’t attend all of the live event. The sessions will be held in Blackboard Collaborate and can be accessed live from any personal computer and most mobile devices. Whether you are just thinking about starting a small makerspace in your library or have been doing it for years, this conference will help you grow and ensure that the space you create works for all students!

Most free books are in the public domain, but that doesn’t mean that they are not relevant for our students. But that’s not the only place to find free books. Some parents and students may benefit from signing up for a free month with a particular service even if they don’t plan to extend their usage beyond the complimentary time.
Many text-to-speech readers are available that can assist with ebooks. Your device and platform may determine which works best for you.
Making a book more enjoyable can easily be done by including some after-reading activities. Here are few to get you started. These are great to share with parents as well!

The teams spent their lunch time imagining, creating, solving problems, tinkering, and exploring their capabilities. Every team worked up until the deadline to make their machine a success. We even had a home entry from our friends the Curry family.
