Five Podcasts for Elementary Learners

by Andrew Roush

Podcasts can be a great way to learn new things, be entertained, or get informed. Whether you’re relaxing, working, or running errands, you can listen and learn, even during what might otherwise be “down time.”

This can be beneficial for elementary school students, too. Some podcasts can help students learn in new or additional ways. Here are five great podcasts for young learners listed in no particular order.

But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids

You probably recognize the question. Starting around age 3, many children start asking “why” about most every aspect of the world. Sure, the sky is blue, but why? This podcast takes on these questions, which can often be daunting even for grown-ups.

Ear Snacks

Hosted by children’s performers Andrew and Polly, this playful show puts kids front and center, helping them explore simple questions that touch on big ideas. Plus, listeners will enjoy music, jokes, and more in this fully-produced podcast.

The Past and the Curious

Not every child loves learning history, but history can offer insights into just about any topic students are curious or passionate about. This show helps young learners get to know the past in fun, functional ways. The New York Times describes it as “accessible but never dumbed-down.”

The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel

Somewhat different than others on this list, The Unexplainable Disappearance… is an award-winning fictional audio drama about middle-school aged students, with middle school-aged performers. This is a great listen for more advanced learners or those headed into the middle grades soon.

Wow in the World

This podcast from NPR focuses on science, tech, and related news and ideas meant to make young people say “Wow!” Explore how scientists use 3D technology to unwrap mummies, how bees make honey (by vomiting!), and more.

Listening Deeper

By the way, if you’re an avid podcast listener, don’t miss out on TCEA’s own podcast, the Ed Tech Club. Each week, we sit down with a guest speaker to discuss everything from big ideas to useful tips.

Going Further with Elementary Learning

Those interested in engaging young learners will also enjoy the Elementary Technology Conference, online June 13–15, 2021. Classroom educators, administrators, librarians, and anyone interested in elementary education will find useful ideas and tips that they can implement right away, all at a virtual conference built exclusively for elementary educators.
